Groups for a specific loss

What happens at a bereavement group

Most groups are small, often between five and fifteen people. A trained volunteer or professional usually hosts. You can talk about the person who died, or you can sit and listen. Nobody has to speak.

Drop-ins and grief cafés are informal. You turn up, have a cup of tea and talk if you want to. Closed courses run for a set number of weeks with the same people each time, and usually need booking.

Some groups are for a particular kind of loss, such as the death of a child, a partner or someone who died by suicide. Many people find it easier to talk with others who have been through something similar.

When a group is not enough

A group suits many people, and one-to-one support suits others. If your grief feels stuck, or everyday life has become hard to manage months after the death, talk to your GP or a bereavement counsellor.
